About the Workshop

Objectives of the Workshop

The Workshop on Continuous Optimization in Riemannian Manifolds aims to provide an international forum for the presentation, discussion, and dissemination of recent advances in continuous optimization on Riemannian manifolds and related areas.

The Workshop seeks to bring together researchers, faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and students from different institutions and countries, promoting scientific exchange and encouraging new collaborations. Particular emphasis is placed on the participation and training of graduate students and young researchers through plenary lectures, technical sessions, short communications, and poster presentations.

The main objectives of the Workshop are to:

  • disseminate recent theoretical, algorithmic, and computational developments in Riemannian optimization;

  • promote collaboration among Brazilian and international research groups;

  • strengthen interaction among graduate programs and contribute to advanced scientific training;

  • encourage graduate students and young researchers to present and discuss their work;

  • foster connections between Riemannian optimization and areas such as machine learning, data science, signal processing, computer vision, and scientific computing;

  • provide an environment for discussing new research directions and developing future scientific collaborations.

Brief History of Previous Editions

The Workshop series was established in 2014 as a specialized forum for research in continuous optimization, with particular emphasis on optimization on Riemannian manifolds. Since then, it has brought together researchers and students from different institutions and regions, contributing to the development of collaborations and to the dissemination of advances in the field.

First Edition — September 1–4, 2014
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The first edition was organized within the Systems Engineering and Computer Science Program (PESC/COPPE/UFRJ) and marked the beginning of the Workshop series.

Second Edition — September 1–4, 2015
Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The second edition was also organized by PESC/COPPE/UFRJ, continuing the scientific exchange initiated in the first meeting and strengthening interaction among researchers working in continuous optimization and geometry.

Third Edition — March 26–28, 2018
Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, Federal University of Goiás (IME/UFG), Goiânia, Brazil

The third edition was organized by the Optimization Group of UFG. It strengthened the participation of UFG in the Workshop series and expanded cooperation among research groups from different Brazilian and international institutions.

Fourth Edition — August 13–16, 2024
Federal University of the Delta of Parnaíba (UFDPar), Parnaíba, Piauí, Brazil

The fourth edition was promoted by UFDPar and UFPI and included invited lectures, contributed presentations, poster sessions, and other scientific activities, further strengthening the national and international scope of the Workshop.

General Information About the Fifth Edition

The fifth edition will take place in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil, from May 3 to 5, 2027, and will be organized by the Optimization Group of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG).

The event is planned as a specialized international meeting, with approximately 60 participants expected from Brazil and abroad. The scientific program will include invited plenary lectures, oral presentations, short communications, and poster sessions, covering both fundamental and applied aspects of continuous and Riemannian optimization.

The Workshop will have institutional participation from graduate programs at UFG, UFPI, UFSC, and PESC/COPPE-UFRJ, strengthening cooperation among research groups from different regions of Brazil and their international partners.

Particular attention will be given to the participation of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and young researchers, providing opportunities to present their work, interact with experienced researchers, and establish new scientific collaborations.

The fifth edition also aims to broaden the international dimension of the Workshop and to reinforce its role as a regular meeting point for the community working on continuous optimization on Riemannian manifolds and related areas.
